Jay Contonio

Product Designer & Full Stack Engineer

Working with the team at Bonkey, I led the conception, design, developement and launch of a collaborative markdown editor named Portway.

Portway’s features include project access, team management, a full Content API with the ability to query structured content from markdown documents with custom fields. Users could configure API keys per project, and export content to multiple formats.

We learned our lesson that “If you build it, they will come” does not apply to software products. We were launching at the same time as services such as Sanity.io and Contentful, who had funding for marketing and other resources. We ended up shutting down Portway after two years.

Recently, we open-sourced the code, design files, documentation, and other components of the Portway service, so that new web developers could look at all the parts of a complex web application.
